Protect your critical online accounts with two-factor authentication so nobody can break in, even if they guess your password.
Choose one route only
For the easiest experience, use a laptop and a phone together. You open your account on the laptop screen and use your phone to scan the square barcode in seconds.
1. Password First
You type in your normal email address and password.
→
2. Live Code from Phone
You read a 6-digit rolling code generated on your phone screen.
→
3. Account Opens
Even if a thief steals your password, they are blocked without your phone.
Install an authenticator app first
Before turning on two-step verification, install Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator on your phone. The app creates a fresh 6-digit code every thirty seconds, even if your phone has no internet, Wi-Fi, or mobile signal.
Crucial Step — Sign In & Cloud Sync: Immediately after downloading Google Authenticator, sign in with your main Gmail account. This backs up all your secret 2FA keys to Google Cloud. If you ever drop, break, or lose your phone, simply installing Google Authenticator on your new phone and signing into that same Gmail will bring all your codes back instantly!

ANDROID + LAPTOP ROUTE (GMAIL EXAMPLE)
Step-by-Step: Setting Up 2FA for Google Gmail
Follow these detailed steps using your laptop and your Android phone together. This makes the setup straightforward because your phone can scan the barcode directly off your laptop screen.
Phone: Play Store → Install Authenticator → Sign into Gmail (Cloud Sync) | Laptop: gmail.com → Security → 2-Step Verification
Install Google Authenticator on your phone: Open the Google Play Store. Search for Google Authenticator published by Google LLC. Tap Install. When finished, tap Open. When prompted for camera permission, tap While using the app or Allow so it can scan QR barcodes.
Sign in to your main Gmail account in the app (Enable Cloud Sync):
When you first launch Google Authenticator, it asks you to sign in.
Tap Continue as [Your Name] or choose your main Gmail address from the list.
Look at the top right corner of the Authenticator screen. You should see your profile picture or initial with a small green cloud icon with a checkmark.
Why this matters: This syncs your authentication codes to your Google Account. If you ever lose your phone, drop it in water, or get a new mobile, simply installing Authenticator on that new phone and logging into your Gmail account will automatically bring all your 2FA codes back!
Open your Google account on your laptop: On your laptop, open your web browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox) and go to gmail.com. Sign in with your normal email address and password.
Open your account security dashboard: Click on your profile picture or initials icon in the top right corner of the laptop screen. Click the blue button that says Manage your Google Account. On the left side menu, click the Security tab.
Open Two-Step Verification: Scroll down to the section named How you sign in to Google and click on 2-Step Verification. Google will ask you to enter your password once again to verify your identity. Enter it and click Next.
Choose Authenticator app: Scroll down the page until you find Authenticator app and click it. Then click the button that says + Set up authenticator. A square black-and-white QR barcode will pop up on your laptop screen. Leave it open.
Scan the barcode with your phone: Pick up your Android phone, open Google Authenticator, and tap the colourful plus button (+) in the bottom right corner. Select Scan a QR code. Point your phone camera at your laptop screen so the barcode fits inside the lines. It scans instantly without taking a photo.
Verify the live code: A row labeled Google with your email address will now appear in your phone app showing six numbers and a small blue timer circle. On your laptop, click Next. Type those exact six numbers into the box on your laptop screen and click Verify.
Write down your backup codes: On the laptop security page, look for Backup codes and click Get backup codes. Write down the 10 emergency numbers with a pen in a private notebook. Keep this safe as an ultimate fallback.
✓ Finished: Google Authenticator is now safely linked, synced to your Google Account, and protecting your Gmail.

What happens when logging in after 2FA?
Whenever you log in to your account from a new computer, a school laptop, or an unfamiliar browser, follow this exact routine:
Step 1: Sign In
Type your regular email and password into the login page.
→
Step 2: Open App on Phone
Open Google Authenticator and locate the row matching your account.
→
Step 3: Enter Rolling Code
Check that the timer circle has time left, type the six numbers, and enter.
Important Reminder: If the circular timer next to the 6-digit code is almost gone, wait two seconds for the fresh numbers to appear before typing.
Never share your 2FA codes: Legitimate representatives from Google, Apple, Microsoft, banks, and schools will never ask you to read your 6-digit code aloud, forward it by text, or enter it into an unexpected link.
Essential security checklist
Ensure your Google Authenticator shows the green cloud sync icon linked to your main Gmail.
Use an authenticator app rather than SMS text messages whenever possible.
Write down your emergency backup recovery codes on paper and keep them in a safe place.
Keep your mobile phone locked with a secure PIN, fingerprint, or Face ID.
Regularly review active devices in your account settings and log out of unrecognized machines.
Use a strong, unique password alongside two-step verification.
